Rose Quartz vs Pink Calcite: How to Tell Them Apart
Rose quartz and pink calcite can share a soft pink color, but they belong to different mineral groups and need different care.
Hardness difference
Rose quartz is Mohs 7. Calcite is Mohs 3. The difference makes calcite much more vulnerable to scratching. Avoid deliberately testing a polished piece; use known provenance and other visible clues first.
Cleavage and fracture
Calcite has perfect rhombohedral cleavage and may show repeated flat directions. Quartz has no cleavage and typically breaks with curved conchoidal surfaces.
Luster and texture
Rose quartz usually has a glassy to slightly waxy surface and cloudy internal appearance. Pink calcite may look waxier, softer, and show internal cleavage reflections.
Response to acids
Calcite reacts with acid, but acid testing can damage a specimen and should not be used on finished, valuable, or unknown material. The difference is scientifically useful but not a recommended home test.
Care implications
Keep calcite dry and away from acidic cleaners. Store it separately from quartz because rose quartz can scratch it. Both should be protected from hard impacts.
When color misleads
Dyed calcite, glass, resin, and other pink minerals may overlap in appearance. Color is a starting clue, never a complete identification.
