How to Store Crystal Jewelry by Mohs Hardness
A jewelry box protects pieces from the room, but it does not automatically protect them from one another.
Why hardness matters
Diamond, corundum, topaz, beryl, quartz, feldspar, and softer materials can scratch one another when they move together. The Mohs scale is ordinal, so each step is not an equal increase.
Separate hard from soft
Keep quartz varieties away from fluorite, calcite, malachite, lapis lazuli, and gypsum. Even polished quartz can abrade a softer cabochon over repeated travel.
Cleavage changes the plan
Moonstone, fluorite, calcite, and topaz may split along cleavage after a sharp impact. Give them padded compartments even when their surface hardness seems adequate.
Protect settings and coatings
Prongs, plated metal, foil backs, glued components, and surface coatings may be more fragile than the gem. Close chains, cover sharp posts, and avoid letting metal edges rub across stones.
Travel routine
- Use one soft pouch per piece.
- Place pouches in a rigid divided case.
- Keep heavy specimens away from jewelry.
- Do not leave heat-sensitive material in a parked car.
Label unusual care needs
A small dry-care or no-ultrasonic label prevents accidental damage when someone else cleans or stores the piece.
At-a-glance reference
| Practical group | Examples | Storage rule |
|---|---|---|
| Very soft · Mohs 2–4 | Selenite, calcite, fluorite, malachite | Individual padded compartment; no loose contact with quartz |
| Moderate · Mohs 5–6.5 | Lapis lazuli, moonstone, some feldspars | Separate from harder gems; cushion cleavage-prone pieces |
| Durable surface · Mohs 6.5–7.5 | Quartz, garnet, tourmaline | Still separate pieces to protect polish, edges, and settings |
| Very hard · Mohs 8–10 | Topaz, corundum, diamond | Keep away from every softer material, including metal surfaces |
| Organic or composite | Pearl, coral, assembled or glued jewelry | Store by material-specific care, not Mohs number alone |
Frequently asked questions
Can quartz jewelry be stored together?
Quartz pieces share similar hardness, but they can still chip each other, abrade metal, or scratch softer inclusions and coatings. Separate pouches are safer.
Does a higher Mohs number mean a gemstone cannot break?
No. Mohs measures scratch resistance, not resistance to chipping or splitting. Cleavage and toughness must also be considered.
What is the safest travel setup for crystal jewelry?
Close clasps, cover sharp posts, place each piece in its own soft pouch, and put the pouches in a rigid divided case.
